Black Bean Burgers

Makes 8 burgers

With the rising cost of meat, black bean burgers are a budget-friendly option that doesn’t skimp on flavor. Beans are affordable, hearty, and make a great veggie burger substitute—and if you’ve got meat lovers at the table, they can still get their fix by adding a little crispy bacon on top. Everyone wins.

Ingredients:

  • 500g cooked black beans (2 cans drained and rinsed)
  • 1 small red onion, chopped roughly
  • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and quartered
  • 2 egg
  • 100g oats
  • 1 Tbsp paprika
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp chili flakes
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

Directions:

  1. Place all ingredients except eggs & beans in a food processor and process until fine. Add eggs & beans, process until mixture is well combined with a few large bean pieces still in the mix.
  2. Form into 8 patties. Place patties on parchment lined cooked sheet and refrigerate at least 1 hour.
  3. Preheat oven to 190°C. Remove tray of patties from the refrigerator and immediately place in oven. Bake for 20 min until cooked through. No need to flip halfway through! Excellent on fresh crusty rolls with your favorite burger toppings.

  1. The patties will be quite moist when you are forming them. They will stiffen up in the fridge and hold their shape wonderfully when baked.  It is not recommened to pan fry or grill them.
